I've been lurking here for a while, am new to watches, and have a
variety of questions:
1) I've seen watch winders on Ebay that seem to appear regularly, but
not many appear to sell. Does anyone know anything about these? Do
they work? Do they last reasonably well? Are they adjustable?
Anything else?
IMHO, the best are Orbita's.
I gather that Orbita invented/developed them. And they are expensive! The question is: do the ones on Ebay work, even if they don't last as long. Anyone know?
About winders: if the watch is intended to run constantly for many
years, is there any difference between wearing it and having it on a
winder? I mean, it wearing out would seem to be a non-issue if it's
serviced regularly.
Actually, not so long ago, we have debated watch winders in an
extensive thread, over the pas 24 months in several, all recorded.
Please search within the NG.
Yes, I read the discussion. The issue seemed to be that having the watch run unnecessarily was needless wear and tear. I concluded that the difference wasn't worth worrying about if one serviced the watch regularly. After all, that's what they are intended to do, right?
My question is whether the watch responds differently to winders than it does to the arm? Does regular movement cause it to function differently than irregular movement?

And I'm about to conclude that nobody knows for sure!
Please do so, as nobody's supposed to know the precise
pronounciation's rules of foreign languages! But actually, the rule is
to pronounce it the right way, following those of the initial language
of each TM.
Thanks. I'm not up on those rules, which is why I asked specific questions. Do they say PATek PhillEEP in some parts of Switzerland, and PaTEK PhillEEP in other parts? And Hoyer in some parts of Germany and Hawyer in other parts?

All mechanical watches have built in usefulness and all genuine
watches are basically virtuous.
After years of wearing quartz watches, I'd say mechanical watches, either hand wind or automatic, have a built in virtue.
I take it that you're saying genuine as opposed to fake, like replicas. I can understand that, especially if I had a stake in the issue. OTOH, they say the imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Like Rolex replicas, they're cheaper by far and almost certainly not of the same quality, but the more fakes that are out there, the more people are going to want to buy the real thing. Fakes are free advertisement! And after all, it's production times profit per item that rings the bells, not how many sales were missed because a replica was affordable when the real thing wasn't.
I think the big issue is the fake Rolexes more than anything else because Rolexes are so well known. Who would know the difference between a Breguet and a replica if the person had never seen a Breguet? And then there is the bit about styles. Rolex invented the dive watch, is that right? Now there are dive watches all over the place, and some of them have the magnifier, and some don't. Are they fakes as well? Don't think so.
Anyway I wouldn't wear a replica because there are so many really nice affordable watches that look like just about anything one would want. I see the fake chronographs (calendariums?) with pushers rather than correctors. Looks like people really like the look of a chronograph, and I wouldn't be surprised if that has driven up the price of chronographs as well.
What I want is a 5100 based chrono. The sweep minute counter must be so much easier to see. Maybe some day I'll be able to afford one, though probably would never get to the point where I could service one.
7) That's enough for now.
Watch it! :-)
I will! Thanks.
