China is a manufacturing powerhouse, and not only for low-tech goods.
If you stick to your rule, soon you won't be able to buy anything

I was referring to tools, furniture

I looked at a lot of furniture recently here in the US. You would be
amazed: Most of it is made in....China. And not just the cheap stuff. I
am talking brand-name (like Stanley, which I like a lot, BTW),
expensive stuff.

(and no, won't buy IKEA crap
either<g>),

I didn't know they reached the fifth continent... I confess to liking
some of their stuff, especially lamps and accessories. When we did our
kitchen, I seriously looked at their offerings. I found only one that I
liked, but it wasn't cheap. BTW, the Ikea founder is the richest man in
Switzerland.

etc.. I'll buy a socket set made in Japan before touching
anything coming from China/Taiwan, but i'll prefer an ugly black
German set or even a pretty shiny Sidchrome set much before that.
Of course, i am aware of a lot of brand name electronics being at
least assembled in those countries(mostly under strict-ish supervision
by the tendering company) and they are making strives in other facets
of industry on their own too, but still, it'll be a long time before i
will trust the quality on anything produced *solely* by them.
So far i'm not convinced that they actually *do* want to produce good
stuff. Not unlike the Japanese, who on the whole are happy to make
reasonable quality stuff at resonable prices, with some high
quality/price things thrown in, to show that they can do better, but
not interested in making it a habit.
China,IMO, is yet to reach what i consider "reasonable" level and
until they do, i'll buy something else..

I don't think it's a matter of they wanting to produce good stuff: They
just respond to the market requests. They started where they could,
with low-level stuff, but they are learning very quickly. As far as
quality goes, China can actually provide skilled and qualified work
force (more so than, say, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, etc.). In the
end, it doesn't matter where a good is produced: VW makes higher
quality cars in Mexico than GM does in Illinois.
