No, although I did take a course on it in college. Why do you ask?

Jack,
Did you ever work in marketing?

Remember that Rolex sells worldwide - their are two billion wrists in
China - many of them don't really need or want cars but they are in need
of a status symbol. A gold Rolex will do nicely. India is another big
potential market. Not to mention all of the other Asian countries -
Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, etc.. Even if only the top 25% of the
population has an income that is equivalent to the average Western
income, that's still as big a market as Western Europe or US.
But you are right that they are playing a dangerous game in staking their
entire company on a product that hasn't been redesigned in 30+ years.
There may indeed come a generation that has no interest in their obsolete
technology, may even see it as "fuddy duddy" - after WWI, very few young
men wanted anything to do with pocket watches, which they associated with
the generation of their parents and grandparents. We know how that
transition turned out for most of the US pocket watch industry.
I can also see that in the West, as consumers (even luxury consumers)
become more sophisticated and aware of the nuances of mechanical
watchmaking, there will be a more diversified demand for luxury watches
instead of the "one size fits all" Rolex is THE luxury watch brand
approach. This group is on the cutting edge of that and already Rolex is
passe' around here for the most part. But it may take decades for China
to catch up with that level of sophistication.

You missed my point! I mean mechanical watches, notelectronic gadgets.
What would the MTV generation know about mechanical
machines? Their primary input is from electronics, and anyIndeed. I have a feeling that companies like Rolex, who are so lost in
machine they do encounter, such as cars, is stuffed to the
gills with wiring and software. I can't think what a purely
mechanical watch can offer to impress them other than pure
design -- and if you go there, then you may as well go
quartz and throw in a few electronic gadgets.
old school, are balancing on the edge of a very slippery slide.
Mind you, there is nothing wrong with Rolexes. They are damn good
watches, but will they be ready to adjust when the shit hits the fan.
I'm not convinced.
