They sell cheap case back openers on ebay. Also if you have a Harbor Freight
tool store near you they sell them there or over the internet. Don't forget
to get a set of jeweler's screwdrivers as well.

I'm thinking that maybe I'll try to tighten the rotor screw a bit
more. Where can I get the type of pliers that watch repair people use
to open this watch? I tried with my needle nose and it doesn't fit
well enough to get the leverage needed to unscrew the back cover.

Right, the watch case is close enough to keep the screw from coming all
the way out, but the rotor is not winding the watch. I think if you get
the rotor screw put in properly the rest of the problems will go away.
