It's interesting that for some collectibles (mostly wooden) wear and
damage is renamed patina bdecause it's considered a good thing.

Well in the case of the really ancient clock or watch it is probably wise
to put it in a display case rather than send it out for repair.

The obvious example was discussed here a few months ago, and several
times for that matter. An Italian town tried to repair the 400 year old
clock in the guild hall and pretty much ruined it. In hindsight the
clock should have been moved to a museum and the tower clock replaced
with an electric motor.
