First off, I would say a "good" mechanical watch doesn't need lubing every 3
years, or it's not a good watch. Even Rolexes don't need that much
attention. Sorry, if you're fiddling with your watches that much then
something's wrong. Second, even if I were to agree that you had to do that,
how many watches do you have that you could justify spending $hundreds on
maintaining? A couple? A few? To use your figure of $300 every say 4
years then that's $3000 in 40 years.. the watch better be worth at least
$10,000 to justify that expense. How many people here own one watch worth
over $10,000? A few? How many own more than one over $10,000? Maybe two
people here? If you own several watches over $10,000 then somehow I think
you have enough cash that you're not going to worry about lubing them every
couple of years. In fact, you're probably just going to have one of your
valets take it in without your knowledge. And if you own some 50 year old
$100,000 Breguets or Pateks then all bets are off and you probably have your
own personal jeweler.
No I'm talking about the average guy here. Any shlub can afford a dozen
quartz watches and then have to keep changing the batteries or let them sit
dead on a shelf. And I'm saying I won't do that anymore. If that's your
thing then fine, but not for me. Mechanical/automatic all the way.
