Has anyone had any problems with charging an Eco-Drive? "
No. I have a Skyhawk, resides near light when not on wrist, in past year
has rarely lost any charge value. As you point out, the reversed hue of
display on SH make it easier to read, hence know status.
"...confusing differences between diagrams on the manual and the acutal
watch. There are 3 vertical bars on the far left hand edge of the window
next to where the city name is displayed." Right. No help here either:

"Below the city name if you look hard and at an angle, you can see the 3
horizontal bars of the charge indicator." This should be it. Very
difficult to read due to that reverse hue situation, but that's in the right
place and on the correct plane as a Skyhawk. From the left margin they bear
right and terminate at a point equal with the right border of second letter
in city identifier. So if the city reads N Y C, then all bars terminate at
the end of the Y. They originate at different points along the left margin
due to curving dial profile. From bottom to top; shortest bar, longer bar,
longest bar, space, city identifier.
The Skyhawk manual was good, not great but good, and I would suspect your
actual hardware may be a new enough model the factory didn't bother with an
updated reprint.
Best guess - rac

Has anyone had any problems with charging an Eco-Drive? I bought a
Citizen Black-Eagle JR3156-51E a few weeks ago but have never been able
to get the charge bar to indicate as would appear on the manual. This
watch has a black display area with white characters unlike the
titanium Skyhawk models that have a grey display with black characters.
There are also some confusing differences between diagrams on the
manual and the acutal watch. There are 3 vertical bars on the far left
hand edge of the window next to where the city name is displayed. These
are not mentionned anywhere in the manual! Below the city name if you
look hard and at an angle, you can see the 3 horizontal bars of the
charge indicator.
Confused....
