I buy 14k Lord Elgins for $100 - $125, have them serviced for $30 - $40 and sell them for $250 - $400. Faber's 14k gold filled Gruen Curvex at $3150 is way off too. OTOH, a 70's Omega Speedmaster Chrono with no crown guard at $1,575 isn't far off the mark. Seeing Faber's retail prices I asked if they wanted to buy some Elgins, Movados, Omegas, etc. No, not interested, they only want Rolex, Patek, Vacheron.
I doubt that Faber's website reflects current inventory. Their store is in prime retail territory, across the street from MOMA and around the corner from Saks.

I'd say about 3 to 5x based upon a few randomly selected items - 14k Lord Elgins that are worth maybe $250 to $400 on ebay that go for $1250, etc. I suppose those same Elgins might go at an estate auction or flea market for $100 or $150 (or on a really good day for $20 if the seller is truly clueless as to what they have). I'm sure if you bought that $1250 Elgin from Faber, handed it to a friend and asked him to sell it back to the shop they wouldn't hesitate to offer him $250 for the same watch on the "buy' side..
What's an example of an item that you think is inflated by a factor of 10 on the Faber website.

You are correct, it's Faber not Farber. Some of the prices stated on the website are 10x what I'm willing to pay.

Faber (not Farber) was who I was thinking of. The prices are "full retail" to say the least. Faber is very well aware of what these watches are worth and charges even more. I'd rather buy from someone who is not so well informed or does not have an inflated opinion of the value of vintage pieces. If you buy at Faber's inflated prices, the chances that you'll ever be able to resell without a loss in the short run are next to nil.

Having wandered through the many stalls along 47th St. I can suggest that though there are some bargains there, you might want to count you fingers after shaking hands with some of the dealers. Tournau isn't really a vintage watch dealer but they have some overpriced stuff. Aaron Farber has a beautiful store and some wonderful things. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from Aaron Farber except his prices are about 2x what I'm willing to pay for any given watch.

If this is the dealer I think you are referring to, please be aware you will pay dearly for that well lighted display and the NY rents he is paying. I think with a careful search you could do much better buying
from an internet source located in a city with lower overhead. Also that
you may get a watch that has been cleaned up cosmetically but that may not be as good on the inside as it appears on the outside.

Hey SWG:
Actually, I have been in contact with a NYC jeweler regarding vintage
Waltham, Elgin, Mido, Hamilton, and Movado. He actually has a huge
display--so well-lighted, that you can really see every detail of the
watches. I just may pick one up soon.
