The low clamps.
The width of the rails/runners, which meant that some g/f plates could

The rail and base(under the stake), which can foul arbors and the
center wheel, when working near them. ie: a third wheel bush on an
Enfield striker.
So i've made the work distance much higher, the runners wider and the
clamps much taller. The base is lean, set low well below the runners,
with no additional meat to get into the way of anything. With the use
of long stakes to lift the plate even higher off the tool, i have no
problems with 99% of plates now fouling even the rails, let alone the
base.
All in all, it's a tool that has been workign hard for the past 10-12
years, cost me about 400 Aussie bucks(Incl. Bergeon cutters(35+ ea)
bought), and is much better for the job than the commercial one was at
the time.
There will always be ''improvements'' needed for some tools, or the
occasional ''special'' tool. I have made many of these. I have used
both the Bergeon and the KWM bushing tools(and some pieces of junk)and have
found them serviceable. What specific problems did find wrong?

Making your own bushing set according to the exact specs that you want
and overcoming the faults and problems the commercially made sets

Mind you, it was my brother's time, but time is time... :-)
You have made my day. Anytime you don't have to re-invent the wheel is
allgood day. There are many watchmaker's/clockmaker's that want to make
of their tools. Spending 40 hours to make a $3 screwdriver, is not my
cup of tea. My ego doesn't need this kind of boost.
