Re: buying my first tag heuer

There are two ways to look at this, which have been debated here before:

One way is to take the approach that you have (and which I largely agree
with personally) - that there are very high diminishing returns, so that the
first few hundred $ brings you 90% of what is possible.

The other is to say that watches are an emotional purchase, that some people
will be satisfied with only "the best", etc. That high end watches are
investments that can be passed to your grandchildren, etc. That is the
approach the high end manufacturers would like you to take.

All of the above. ETA movements in nice stainless cases at a fair price.

Reading your posts, I get the impression that you regard the current lot
of mechanicals from Switzerland as generally quite good. Such that
basic acceptability is not the question, but price/looks/feel/accuracy,
etc is now a formula that can be solved for any of those variables. In
short, high end watches have little more to recommend them and basically
cost too much. Am I right?

Very well put. Everyone needs to fullfil some dream, giving an added
value to their own perception of life. Some fall for watches, jewelry,
shoes, cars, some others for Platinum Big Breated Blondes, High End
HighFi, Computers, Bikes, etc.

Going for High End waches does not hurt any one and one avoids many of
the risks involved with most of the other "hobbies". .-)
