I just heard from the seller. Apparently he took it to a mall jeweler
the first time, and the teenaged girl was talking on the phone while
she put the wrong battery in. He took it to a real watchmaker, who
found the too-thin battery and the retaining strap floating around
inside the movement. With the right battery it works fine.
