you sure the train wheel bridge is properly fitted, not sitting up on a burr or something, I would accept one wheel having excessive endshake because of a modified setting but not all of them
Brilliant.I checked hard and note that the setting for the 4th wheel is not totally flush with the surface of the bridge. Gave it a puch and it is now flush.
yep, it pays to double check the screwed in jewel settings, as I said they are a snug fit generally.
so if the balance screws are hitting this wheel, which ones? the ones near the ends of the arms of the bimetallic balance?
Now only the meantime screw are too close, as they have bigger heads. The one that is actually touching is the one at the balance arm----I am think about bending the arm----OK?
hmmm, do the arms look like they have been bent out, bending the arms will affect the timing (bending in will make the watch gain), and also affect the poise unless you adjust both arms together and check the poise each time you adjust them
if the arms have been bent out, are any of the screws filed down?, in other words the balance was a bit light and gaining too much so the arms were bent out to compensate.
are there any extra holes in the balance rim? if you do band the arms in and the watch gains a lot, you can always add a couple of balance screws to the rim, years ago I bought a box of assorted waltham screws from laRose in the box were quite a few balance screws of different sizes, very handy to have, other than that get the screws from a scraped balance.
well if you modify the plate seat then the screws that hold the setting in place may not go deep enough to firmly hold the setting in place, bit of a catch22, better to mod the jewel setting, and no, don't "grind" it down, mount it in the lathe and machine it.
I am now desparately trying to buy some jewel chucks. Tom mister has some but they go into the #50 collet----according to Levin( "Practical bench Work") these will be difficult to stay true to the center. Levin said there are some one peice jewel chucks built as one collet. Have you seen any?
not lately, they look like a normal collet but have a small step to hold small parts like jewel settings, you can always use a wax chuck
.
