The resistor burned because the diode shorted. I've removed all components
to test them out of circuit. The diode is as short as a length of copper
wire! It overheated and the glass envelope was cracked. I was amazed that
the diode came out intact. Usually, when I removed a blown diode, the glass
crumbles when I unsolder it, and almost always when using needle nose pliers
to remove it.
I'm going to try substituting a 2n2222 NPN transistor and a 1N914 diode in
the circuit. I've got a small resistor sub box to try to dial one in that
will work.
