On one side, the magnificent tradition of the first clockmakers knew how
to isolate axial rotation for the purpose of calibrating their clocks
to 24 hours/360 degrees and on the other side are the great astronomers
who knew how to isolate orbital motion to account for the motion of the
other planets and subsequently the Earth's orbital motion.
The dignity of the noble Western astronomical tradition and the
equally great principles which are responsible for the clock/calendar
system have been under assault from a horrible empirical view that
obscures the easily understood Copernican reasoning -
"For to the earth planetary motions appear sometimes direct, sometimes
stationary, nay, and sometimes retrograde. But from the sun they are
always seen direct, " Newton

Perhaps Galileo's words would convince you that Newton conception is
just as poor as those who tried to link the Earth rotation directly to
the stellar background.

[Here Salviati explains Jupiter's motion, then follows with:]
Now what is said here of Jupiter is to be understood of Saturn and Mars
also. In Saturn these retrogressions are somewhat more frequent than in
Jupiter, because its motion is slower than Jupiter's, so that the Earth
overtakes it in a shorter time. In Mars they are rarer, its motion
being faster than that of Jupiter, so that the Earth spends more time
in catching up with it. Next, as to Venus and Mercury, whose circles
are included within that of the Earth, stoppings and retrograde motions
appear in them also, due not to any motion that really exists in them,
but to the annual motion of the Earth. This is acutely demonstrated by
Copernicus . . .
You see, gentlemen, with what ease and simplicity the annual motion --
if made by the Earth -- lends itself to supplying reasons for the
apparent anomalies which are observed in the movements of the five
planets. . . . It removes them all and reduces these movements to
equable and regular motions; and it was Nicholas Copernicus who first
clarified for us the reasons for this marvelous effect." 1632, Dialogue
Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Galileo
I assure you that I do not enjoy presenting the jewels of Western
achievement to people who are prepared to see them destroyed, not just
the principle behind watches and timekeeping but the great astronomical
insights as well.Given a chance people will enjoy the wonderful human
reasoning that led to both .You cannot justify Flamsteed's reasoning on
the value for axial rotation nor Newton's dumb resolution for the
observed motions of planets but most of all,you cannot consider
yourself to be part of the clockmaking tradition which owes its
existence to complete sincerity.
