They are not highly interchangeable. There were many models in each
size, each had a different staff etc. I believe that manufacturers made
more money selling parts than watches, at least to the government.
Of course there is no interchangeability between Waltham and Elgin.
I had a box full of NYS with broken staffs, none of my model available.
Parts like this can be made by a good mechanic, but it's often more than the
value of the watch.
