Your're right. Just consider you lose, say an average of 30 - 50 % of the purchase price when you sell the used watch after a couple of years. The more expensive the watch, the more money you lose: losing "only" 30 % of a $3,000 watch means roughly losing a grand (a 50 % loss would be more realistic, just look at the going rates of used luxury watches on eBay and other fora). With a middle market watch for $500 - 800, it's mathematically impossible to lose a grand, even if you only pick up a third of the original purchase price, it still means that you might have lost between $300 and 500. It's the same with cars: the more expensive the were when they were new, the more money you lose when you sell them after one or two years.
