I think they are very easy repairs. Soft plates, so bushing is a 20
minute job, polishing the pivots, maybe 30 minutes, which leaves ample
time to fix the usual three pivots which *may* need to be taken down
by a few decimals. I'd say that with even repivoting three wheels(rare
even on the Hermles at this stage) i'd spend maybe 3 hours on a
chimer.
The only real problem is those damn barrels. Nobody likes to bush
barrels, but if i'm wrong on that, just call me "Nobody". :)
Anyway, the cost of a Hermle movement is easily two hours worth of
work. At a glance at LaRose, we're looking at $US130-150 for a chimer.
Roughly 200 Aussie bucks by the time we get it here. Run of the mill
price for a chimer service is about 200-300.
Then it's up to each of us whether we believe that the new movement
can just be stuffed into the case. In the least, oiling is required,
but i would also remove and relube the barrels and test the movement.
So there goes a half hour and i'm back to square one.
I could fix it in 3 hours and make 250 bucks, or i could by a
movement, spend half an hour fitting it and make 50 bucks. Unless i'm
flat out, it's not worth the wait.
My pet hate are the steel plate ansonias and many times i have thought
of just replacing those, because they stuff up my cutters.
Nowdays, i use standard twist drills on those and drill the hole near
to the size(say 2.5mm for a 2.97 and so on) , only then cut it to
final size with the bergeon cutter. A drill costs 3-4 bucks and can be
sharpened over and over, a cutter is about 40 bucks a pop and
sharpening is near impossible.
