I think the parts cost is much lower if you design and build it
yourself. This price is much lower than a "real" mechanical watch that
some people prefer. In fact, it is much lower than the cost that some
fanatics report paying to clean and maintain their mechanical
"masterpieces". I would be much more concerned about battery life and
a possible electric shock from the 200+ volts needed to drive the
display.
