A a modern long case is a piece of furniture with a mass production clock movement added. As others have said here all the movements in mass produced clocks have a design life (like all consumer products) and its <25 years.

Buy the modern clock if you like it as a piece of decorative furniture that happens to tell the time - not as a clock. It will be worth a best 25% of what you pay for it the day it leaves the shop and will not get any better.

If you want a clock, then go to a dealer who sells antique clocks. In the UK provided you shop around, and don't want something that has rarity value, for the same amount as you pay for a high end modern clock, you can get a half decent antique. That will be worth 60% of what you pay as you leave the shop - and will appreciate over the years.

The third alternative is to go to small town auctions. You might get what you want at the price the dealer pays, but be prepared to spend something on maintenance and repair.

If you have a local clock repair shop, go in and chat - they may have something, or know of something that will suit. At the worst you will build a relationship that will stand you in good stead when you find a clock you like.

... I am with the Baron on this, modern clock movement are rubbish when compared to pre 40s clocks, no-one today makes anything like the french drum movements that were so common a 100years ago, even the lowly stamped out American movements outlast clocks made today. ... technically the modern clocks are very good because of improvements in the machinery that makes them, but they cut corners by using less brass in the plates, thinner wheels, crap steel in the pinions that must be real easy to machine but tends to rust badly over time then it pits because of the poor quality steel, not caused by rust, the pits in the pinion and pivot chew out the plates and wheel teeth. ... now we have a 20year old german thing grandfather, almost can guarantee that every hole will be worn and will need bushing, and where the 30s movement might have had 1 or 2 scored pivots in the very well finished and hardened steel which is easy to smooth out and repolish to a high lustre, the modern grandfather movement will have quite few badly scored pivots to the point that it would be easier to cut the pivot off and replace it with blued steel wire, in fact if you cut and replace all the pivots with blued steel it would extend the life of the movement a long way, because no matter how carefully you polish the pivots on a modern movement they never really come up smooth, there are always some pits left because of the crap steel. ...
