Re: Grandfather Clock Advice

That is not exactly what I asked. I believe that buying a new clock is like buying a new watch. There are brands that are better than others. Since this is a horology newsgroup, I was hoping to find some expertise in this area and obtain some recommendations as a good NEW grandfather clock to purchase so that I do not get ripped-off at the local clock shop or buy a product of inferior quality that is destined to be a maintenance headache.

well you won't, you only have 2 makers of grandfather clocks movements, Kieninger, Franz Hermle & Sons (FHS), there is also Urgos but not sure if they are still in business.

the way I see it you have a couple of options

1. concentrate on the case, look, materials, style, forget about what is inside, just be prepared to replace the movement every 20-25years or so (provided the same style movement is still available otherwise you will have to modify or change the dial too)

2. find someone that makes the movement themselves, I know of at least one guy here in Australia that does that, makes his movements to similar specs to the old English longcase movements, I would expect a few centuries (with regular maintenance) lifetime with his clocks, but you would have to be prepared to wait months for it to be made ( I think he only makes 2 or 3 per year) and pay quite a lot of money for it, but at least you can order exactly what you want in the case, dial, and movement features.

these guys are around.

but really you would be better off buying an antique, do your research, find out the going prices etc, its going to hold the value and last a lot longer than any modern grandfather clock with the exception of the handbuilt ones
