There's a lot of references for "Electroluminescent" in google.
When used in watches, the whole background lights up from the rear.
Similar to Timix Indiglo.
Over here it shows a graphic of what "auto" means.

The light turns on when the watch is tilted towards u.
It also shows how an EL display looks like.
"after glow" means that after the light has turned off, one can still make
out the numbers for a short period of time.
Using LED for lighting, the watch face is illuminated by points of light.
Seen here is "super illuminator" using LED. There's an LED at 12 o'clock
and another one at 6 o'clock.

The dial is not evenly lighted like that of EL displays.
Personally I think that LED lighting is going to last much longer than EL
displays. The back light in majority of my devices with EL displays,
electronic compass, GPS, are now not working whereas those using LEDs are.
Maybe it's the heat and humidity here in Singapore.
In a casio calculator watch that I've owned before with EL display, at the
3rd battery change, the watch just hung with the EL display turned on and
random numbers displayed. So it could be that the watch would fail first
before the EL display does.
