Yes,
''Bog oak'' (although it may be oak, yew or pine, different colors
here, oak being the black) was often made into many things. ''Turnbridge
wear'', is a marketing name for products made from this wood. There is
also a connection at the Xmas time, ''Yule log''. Yes, the wood was free,
and in the way of peat farmers/miners. The poor knew of this wood, and
enough Hollywood Irish movies, show sheleigh's also made from this product.
In England it would be ''moor wood'', Scotland ?. There are bogs all over
the world, and some of the wood can be 4000 years+ old.
The tag here is I do not use my watchmaker lathe for the manufacturer,
but do use a ''clockmaker's lathe''(assumption that there is such a
thing)and a much larger, 11'' swing, engine lathe. Sawdust does get
everywhere, but it's worth the fun at my age.
There are many beautiful exotic woods all over the world, Africa, South
America, Indonesia etc. ''Down Under'' also has some exceptional
exotics. It's all about finding ''your color'', (and spending more than 29
cents for a Bic).
Goggle ''bog oak'', search ebay as well, and try ''pen blanks'' too.
About 600 adds at any given time. I have yet to make a pen for myself, as
I am not worthy.
Might be able to make a watch dial from the stuff, Hamilton did that in
the 50's /60's for a production model, didn't they?
And then there is always mammoth ivory, 15,000 years old. No ban on
this product as mammoth's are extinct.
