Indeed, i'd like to pick the Baron's brain, as well as Daz's and i'm
sure there are a few more here who are in the trade, if in lurking. None the less, what we do is nothing more than a job. The fact that i
can do it with relative ease after 25 years of active work is not
surprising. If i could replace a brain and make it go at 18,000
ticks(+- 5), now that would be surprising, especially to the owner who
at that rate would not catch on for weeks anyway..probably still busy
trying to process how to operate a door knob. :)
same here :)
after 35years I really don't think about it anymore, if something different comes up then that sparks a few grey cells, I did an St1686, (incabloc 19j version) yesterday, a friend picked it up at Vinnies for $7, in pretty good condition for a 60s watch, stripped it down, cleaned it, replaced the coverplate and sweep seconds wheel, found a NOS seconds hand to suit, new rubber gasket for the back, rated it to 5secs fast per day to compensate for positional errors, the whole thing took me less than 40mins to do, would have done it quicker but I waiting for something else to finish so this was a time filler.
but I suppose to someone watching me they would wonder how I can do it, that I pulled the watch to pieces in five minutes (if that), and placed the parts in the cleaning basket, thats a complete strip down, incabloc jewels out, endcap jewels in the plates, coverplate off to remove the dial train, etc, but having done thousands of movements similar over the years I really don't give it much thought.
The guy who can put an ohmmeter across various pins on a circuit board with 150 compononents and points to the one that needs to be replaced is damn impressive to me. He won't think much of it though.
yep, have a couple of mates who can do that, apart from checking for dry joints or something obvious, circuit boards are a mistery to me, yet I can build computers, install os, fix networking problems, build RC Gliders and cars, oh and watches and clocks :)
