And the fact that some people seem to think that only anything that
occurs in the USA is noticeable or important!

The enquiry and comments was based on fact that;
a) In this part of Canada the building boom has NOT been over.
Although the economy is NOW slowing down, there has been, at least
until very recently, a brisk demand for new houses! Some it has been
for the four bedroom, 3000+ sq.foot with double garage and jacuzzi
type thing on quarter to half acre lots.
In fact a friend who is a qualified carpenter has been working outside
right through the fall and into last winter, for a contractor;
building somewhat smaller houses. He is now working, daily doing
interior renovation work on older business buildings.
b) Neither he nor I had heard about 'bad drywall' until mentioned on
this news group. And, as far as we both know, there have not been such
problems here? It is the sort of thing that would get known fairly
quickly among the building and do it yourself community. As did
aluminum wiring back in the 70s!

In the next six months or so however it appears we will see a decrease/
slump in house prices.

The last thing anyone needs, in a depressed economy, is a major
problem with a new or renovated house.
Anyway a more analytical and sensible discussion thread on the topic
of why and how certain drywall might be defective has started above.

Naturally we look for low prices; for example a local (Canadian) big
box outlet here is advertising duplex GFI outlets at about half their
normal price. I'll take a look because need a couple and my relative
needs to equip his concrete floored garage more safely. BUT; based on
some previous experience with cheap imported GFI outlets, two of which
have failed during last few years, going open, may very well pass up
that sale.

BTW haven't been into our local WM since Christmas IIRC. Also seeing
'Chinese' goods in s.market, not so much on the food side; although
can one trust labelling?

But the fact seems to remain that when we import and buy on price the
quality may not be to our current/previously expected standards. I've
got a package of briefs in hand made in Costa Rica! They look OK, but
time and laundering will tell!

Before WWII and then after it, Japan was initially known as the
producer of cheap 'tinny' goods. And even into the 1960s some Honda
motor vehicles were a joke; I drove one in Ottawa (Federal capital of
Canada) in 1967 and it had a chain drive. Little more than an enlarged
motorcycle; completely unsuitable, then, for most North American
conditions!

Just because something is imported however doesn't mean it's going to
remain poor quality. Today Honda, Lexus, Nissan, Toyota and others
produce very good vehicles, that now are not cheap, but dominate the
market in many parts of the world.

We weren't importing Chinese sheetrock because it was cheap , it was because American and Canadian manufactures could not meet demand...It has been a year or two since there has been a shortage and it is no longer being imported or used..Just don't buy a house that smells like somebody took a shit in the corner and you'll be fine...Some idiots did however and now are up shit creek without a paddle , so to speak...LOL...
