[snip story of headliner removal]
Here's the only remaining problem. The chrome roof trim was put on
with *** metal screws. The points of these screws are sticking out
of the tin, above the rear seat. I dont want someone to scrape their
head on these sharp screws. What can I put over them so they are not
sharp points?
I'm looking more for something like CAP NUTS, which are made for
bolts, but not for *** metal screws (as far as I know). Does anyone
have any suggestions or ideas?
Cap nuts might work, even though they're not made for *** metal
screws. How about getting a few sizes and seeing if you can twist them
onto the screw ends tight enough so they'll stay put? If they go on and
don't come off, you're in business.
But wasn't there something there before protecting the car's occupants
from the screws? Surely something more than just foam rubber and cloth?
You're right, they might fit. All I can do is try.
No, there was nothing else there. Just 1/4" foam below the roof
framing bars, covered by cloth. This foam/cloth ceiling was just
suspended below the framing, and these screws stick out 1/2". so in a
rollover accident, people would have been jabbed by them, because that
roof foam (like foam core used for signs), is real weak.
[...]
Eventually I got tired of looking at them and took my Dremel and a cut off wheel and just sliced the tips off entirely. It only took a few seconds for each of the screw tips.
I now vote for that method. Best because there's nothing to fall off of the exposed screw and subject the car's occupants to painful poking. (You could hit the sliced-off screws with a little paint to prevent rust.)

that. Let ME do it.'"
