And to add insult to injury some swine has copped my personal email
address and is using it as the return address in the headers of spam
being sent all over the world.
So now, in addition to the usual spam in my email inbox, I get a half
dozen or so "sorry we couldn't deliver your message" emails every day
from various ISPs telling me they couldn't deliver "my" message for
reasons like "that address is no longer valid" or "that mailbox is
full". That's what tipped me off to someone else inserting my email
address in the headers of their spam.
Not just one swine; that seems to be a standard operating procedure for
some of the spam-sending software. Spammers have been doing this with
my address for years (but I've been posting on Usenet with this same
address for 14 years, so it's in all of the email address lists).
It's annoying to think that my reputaion could be injured by this sort
of thing. I've already told my ISP about what's going on and swore to
them "It ain't me."
Don't worry. Most people don't read much spam these days because of
filtering. And if they *do* look at a particular message, the header
generally contains enough information for the recipient to figure out
that the message didn't really come from you.
In theory, if they're really lucky, the spammer might happen to send
mail "from" your address to a recipient who actually knows you, and
manage to get through the recipients filters. But the odds are against
it.
