FWIW, I replaced the fan motor in my furnace a couple of years ago.
The motor cost me about 100 bucks, and it took me about half a day,
including finding and procuring the replacement.  It was a pretty
dirty job, though, so you might want to hire it out.

500 bucks seems high to me.
