Yes, Raz, you would have saved all the extra heat loss all night for
not having kept the temperature 15 degrees higher.

You shouldn't really need a study-- the cooler your house, the less it
costs to heat. So if you have a set-back thermostat and use it you
will save money vs. not changing the temperature.

Of course if you manually move your thermostat each time you
arrive/leave/sleep/wake up, you might achieve the same savings, but
you'd be waking up/coming home to a colder house. The thermostat can
be set to heat the place up a bit before you wake up/get home, so it's
the right temperature WHEN you want it, something you can't do
manually.

The only possible exception is that if your schedule is so variable
that the set-back wouldn't work for you.

My guess is that you'd easily earn back the price of the thermostat in
one winter if you live somewhere that it gets cold at night.

I am not in the thermostat nor energy business.
