OK...finally had a little time yesterday....QUICK REHASH-so I recently
bought a 1997 SG1, changed the pickup to a SD Dimebucker. Guitar
hummed a lot (even with original 500Tpickup).
Anyhoo, I made a metal box for inside the control cavity. I used a
tin, like those aluminum disposable lasagna pans. Cut it easily with a
scissor, was able to do the whole thing with one peice, just bent the
sides up and made holes for the controls etc. Then another flat peice
on the back of the plastic control cover. Zip zip and it is done.
The noise is definitely lower than it was, and actually helped a lot
in single coil mode....but also in humbucker mode which is the one
that annoyed me. So well worth the little bit of trouble and really
made a difference!
This is my #1 guitar...I just love it...best SG I've ever owned and
I've owned probably close to 10 of all different types and years. Turn
the volume down a bit for rhythm and up for leads...simple and to the
point.
I may put my 08 LP standard faded up for sale soon, not because I
don't like it....but I rarely take it out....and it is worth a fair
amount of money.
Just a thought here...
I have an OLD Seymour Duncan JB that hums more than other pickups. I'm not sure why, but I'm in a horrible location, and I'm wondering if my coils are perfectly balanced. It came in my SG Special, so I don't know how old. But it's old.
If coils aren't balanced, you don't cancel all of the hum.
