Hello, I'm interested in your viewpoint on the guitar type
used in Dire Straits Lady Writer--what makes the sound
the way it is. Thanks.

fingers - stratocaster - single coils - pickup position 2 or 4 - tube
amp ( fender type)
It helps if the amp is a 5E3 ( Tweed Deluxe )...
on the edge of break up - practise and talent
fingers, practise and talent ar propably the most important inputs...

Okay, Thanks for figuring it out.
Trouble is, I don't know anything about the technology, I AM glad
someone (you) could provide an answer. Could you throw me a
bone and give some general information about when this kind of
guitar playing was popular or if you remember other songs that
sound like this...? Your original answer seems like Dire Straits
was playing old fashioned retro style. Thanks again.
Knopfler copped * A LOT * of ideas from J.J. Cale. But he also stole
from folks like Chet Atkins, others.

Song at link is from 1992, but it's just one of the more obvious
examples of what they have in common. JJ Cale was playing that way
decades before Dire Straits broke.
Dunno what it is about JJ, but his ideas sure got around.
In a way, it's retro, and in a way, it's still more modern than
anything else out there. Music is funny that way.

Hi Les,
for *me* it's easier to get typical Kopfleresque tones with my SF
Vibrolux Reverb, than with my 5E3...
Aha!
AFAIK he used an old Brownface Vibrolux in the very old days. This one
would be "half the way" between a tweed and a BF Fender.
I'd swear I saw a picture of him with a 5E3.
Later on he seems to have used Musicmans and Boogies.
The fingers were allways the same ;-)
regards
Jochen
