Help with String Action

The D and G strings are touching the first (and a bit of the second) fret on my Aria Pro II CS-350. This is the first guitar I've owned with a Kahler Tremolo, so I'm charting into new territory with this setup. The neck is dead straight except at the top (by the headstock) where there's a tiny kink. Here's a picture: http://s273.photobucket.com/albums/jj209/adam_l79/Aria%20Pro%20II%20CS-350/. I need to adjust the trust rod, but I'm unsure whether I should loosen the locking nut before this adjustment. Any suggestions?
