Me first:
I have 7 electrics, all modded Strat types, Teles & LPs, 2 acoustics
and a bass to choose from. 6 guitar amps, 1 bass amp.
For a guitar, even though I consider myself a LP guy first and
foremost, I'd have to go with my heavily modded GFS Tele, DiMarzio
Area T pups, all custom electronics & guts, neck refretted with low,
vintage frets so I can mash them without worrying about going sharp,
locking tuners:

The Area T's transformed that guitar: Low noise, not quite as much
twang as regular Tele SC's, but enough for me. The in between
position is incredible for rhythm, those two work really well
together. The guitar is heavy, which I like, and for a 12" radius
fingerboard it plays real comfortably. I guess I'd pick that one not
necessarily because it the most versatile guitar or the most
flawlwssly constructed (like my string-through Carvin DC200 with
humbuckers & active electronics up the yin-yang), but it just fits
what I play and how I play more so than any of my other guitars. And
the Are T's clean up nicely, but they can growl nice & heavy if you
drive them.
For an amp, I can't live without my 18W Atomic Reactor 112 tube slave
amp hooked to my Pod 2.0. Yeah, I know, it's a Pod...but the EL84
tube power amp totally transforms how the thing translates through an
amp instead of just headphones or for recording. I can get almost any
tone I'm looking for with this combination, and it roars at gig
volumes. It plays well with the Tele...enough said. Everything just
lines up with the two together.

I'd be happy with either one of these guitars. Flip a coin.
Even just 10 years ago, I would've never given myself any chance in
hell with a Tele. Being a LP guy. But only recently I realized that
I like LP grunt & Tele twang...but I just can't get into Strat quack,
no matter how much I've tried. Maybe it's the vintage, bell-like pups
without a lot of mids; I've never had any luck getting sounds I like
with guitars like that playing out. Maybe if I tried a Texas Strat or
something.

I agree with you (somewhat) about lower output single coils on the
Strat and playing out live in a rockin band. I would spend a lot
of time playing on the bridge humbucker in this case.
Now if you specifically stated gear for "playing out live"
then it would be an easier choice for me (I love the Deluxe reverb
but sometimes it's just not quite enough for harder rockin bands)
so... for "playing out live" it would be -

in this live gig rig (which is exactly what I now use) I do bring
the Fender Telecaster with me and it gets some stage time for certain
songs we play (some country rock which actually rocks as hard or
harder than any classic rock stuff) but the HH Strat can do it all for me

I was gonna call you out with 3 stomps but you already got hit. My Q
is why the compressor makes the list? I have a TonePress and seem to
have outgrown my fondness for it ( it's still a good pedal but I sure
can live without it). How do you use it and why? e
well we play a variety and depending on the crowd or who/where we
are playing I really need the compressor and Tele (or Strat) for
country songs. So it has found a permanent place on the board.
Now for just rockin out stuff I don't need the compressor but
even country rock has a lot of rhythm work going from power chords
to country picking all in the same song. So I need the comp.
Unuless I am perfect picking the single note lines and runs then
it stops the wound strings from booming out or a G string from shreiking
over the vocals. And it smooths it out for nice country electric tones.
When there's a pretty girl out in the crowd the comp lets me get
a little sloppy or overcharged while I'm playing and checking her out
and it still sounds like a smooth scale run.- Hide quoted text -

the barber tone press has an important internal trim pot (within the pedal)
at least the older model I have does.
anyways - if you don't tweak the internal tone trim pot then stock as
it comes the barber tone press can make things a little dark so I
just turned the tone trim pot so that it keeps the highs and doesn't
cut them out.
Then I adjust the volume to near parity or nearly equal to the amp itself
so it doesn't act like a boost or anything. Then I have the Sustain knob
around 1 o'clock and the blend knob around 1'oclock so it's not over the
top dimed out compression. Just a little touch, enough to give a little
smoother tone with just a hint of compression and bloom/sustain.
I have tried lots of compressors and the barber tone press was the
best of them. It actually rivals real high end rack units.
There's no smooshed initial attack of the note or swish/breathing sounds
or anything. It just kinda melts into the sounds. Most people don't
even know I am using a compressor because it's not that obvious
since it doesn't really have the sound artifacts that most others
compressors have.
Anyways - most people don't realize about that important internal
tone trim pot which you really need to give a turn to keep the highs
or it can be really too warm as it is set up when you first get it. (imho)
Is that actually a working frequency pot? Because I hate most any
compressor just for their squashing action, be it boss, DOD or any of
the usual suspects, but what I really love about the Marshall ED-1
compressor is it has a knob to select the working frequency, which
works just like that...you can just tighten the low end and keep the
top attack free, or alternatively compress the top end for some
powerful leads while still keeping the low end rather clean and
natural. I use the latter a lot...it really brings out the tube amp
top end harmonic distortion beautifully, yet leaves the low end all
intact.
Your description of the Barber's sound would well fit the ED-1 as
well...I don't think anyone notices if I have it on or not.

Thats the thing (& yes I use the trim pot also - Barber.T.P.)- and I
agree to use it Subtle. But...
If nobody knows it even on ( except you)- and you only get 2 - ? I
can't see it making the count. Distortion pedal & reverb or echo
would be my choice - just MO. ( my amp is single channel has no reverb
