Watched some of Brad Paisley on Palladium last night.....WOW....not
sure what kind of Tele (custom made?)he plays.....but I am now a true
fan of his. Highly impressive. I also liked the fact that he did not
always play completely clean tones, sometimes turned up a bit of
distortion which worked nicely with the Countryish music.

I have said it here a lot of times -
Paisley is the real deal. he can play.
And he tends to use Dr Z amps (usually you'll see
an EL84 Maz 38 Sr or Maz 18 Jr out there somewhere)
on bigger stages the amps are actually mic'd up sitting
behind the stage and out into PA. The amps on stage are
then just for show.

But yeah - he's a great player. Amazing when he
really gets into it. Country shred, chicken pick,
half bends and the whole if it. There used to be
a youtube vid of some of his early playing with his
band and they were getting even beyond country rock into
all out heavy rock stuff. I guess the label didn't
want so much of that getting out and probably asked him
to keep to the country and country rock market.

Anyways, modern country/country rock is usually EL84 amps
cranked up with a little pedal overdrive and power tube saturation.
You'll commonly see Bad Cat's, Matchless and Dr Z out there today.
You'll even see EL34 Marshalls out there for rhythm crunching
and Gibson SG's for rhythm players.

Very rarely anymore will you see modern country acts using
the 6L6 Fender's and single coil Strats.
The front/lead player however can still have a Tele or
anything they want to play. It's the rhythm that's all crunchy now.

I just got myself an inexpensive but great sounding amp head.
(I still use my Fender Prosonic for many gigs) but we are doing
more modern country/all out country rock and I picked up a used
Crate USA Palomino V32 head and I play that through a 2x12 that
is loaded with 2 Eminence Private Jack speakers.
Ahhhh!!!! EL84 amp with the Jack speakers firing off is perfect
crunchy country goodness. It's the only EL84 amp I have ever liked.
it's kinda like a 'poor man's' bad cat and sounds really nice
cranked up. A little 'broken glass' cripsy crunch at the top end
and nice big mids and a gritty bottom end. Stays tight and not mushy though.
And the Private Jack speakers hook up perfectly with it.
I use a Big Apple Strat (HH strat) and it's all a perfect country rock rig.
The pedals I use are a modified Bad Monkey, a Sun Face fuzz and a
Tonerider compressor/sustainer. Away I go...

Pretty soon country rock will become the next 'classic rock'
since it's sitting in a zone where nothing else is really filling in now.

But yeah... slowly the Fender hold on country is fading away.
(you won't see modern country stages with just Fender guitars
and just Fender 6L6 or 6V6 amps anymore) EL84's are where it's
been going for a while now. (and some EL34 amps too).

ah I type too much again. sorry.
