thanks for all the solo comments - keep 'em coming!

My thanks to all those that replied with great solos.
I have enough solos to listen to and study and try to play
for several lifetimes. And each one mentioned is truly great.
Truly thanks to the alt.guitar crew for coming through with great replies.
Some I have never heard of and some I have heard but never really
appreciated them as much as I did now when going back through them again.
Some are dismissed as 'fluff' (for example, some of Elliot's guitar
work when he was in the 'Cars' rock/pop group). But Elliot can really play.
And on and on it goes...
We actually cover a song called Bad Penny from Rory but I never
delved into other stuff he did until a suggestion from the 'solo' thread
for some songs of his. Damn! Rory can play too!
And each from Vai to Satch to Zappa to May to A to Z has their own unique style.
And that's what I really take from it.
They don't have to be shredder fast or technical genius players -
but all of them have this incredible ability to know how to perfectly
fit within a song or fit within a band mix and know when to turn it on
and calm it down. Great style and technique that gives of them their
own sound. Even though Keef Richards may never make it onto 'great solos'
he too has this sound and style that you immediately know when you hear
it and it's unique. Even players like Billy Gibbons don't shred but
as soon as you hear Billy Gibbons in a ZZTop song you just KNOW who's playing
and his solos are not fancy but they burn into your brain and you realize
that's it not all easy to get to this level of sound and originality.
I think the hardest thing is to get your own sound and at some point
stop sounding like someone else you are emulating. Or if you don't
emulate anyone, then get a sound that people imemdiately identify as 'you'
and it sounds good at the same time. Heh. I'm tryin to get there.
