I have a primo 1982 Fender lead III. It's bone stock with the original
case and looks like it was hardly played. I got it that way back in
1992 and never really played it myself. Not because it's not a great
guitar (actually my favorite of any guitar I've ever owned) but
because I was a bass player all those years and usually just played a
beater for my guitar uses.
My question is, I have a full Kahler trem system and was thinking
about maybe installing it on the Lead III. Since the Lead series has
never really taken off on the vintage market and with the bottom
falling out of same there is probably no expectation of this guitar
ever attaining sky-high value. But I'm still a little apprehensive to
mar an otherwise pristine example of the line.
I've gone back to playing guitar full time and am just looking for
some opinions on whether this is a bad idea in terms of modifying the
guitar.

You won't like what the Kahler does to the guitar. If you like the
guitar, leave it as-is. Trust me, you will regret modding it this way.
Must have whammy? Sell the Kahler to someone else who doesn't know
better, and buy some beater with a trem.
