helicopter over Wisconsin. It doesn't seem that long ago. I was at
his last show that night in Alpine Valley. I'd been watching the show
from down front and went backstage just after the encore ended. I
remember commenting to a friend as we walked past the four helicopters
idling nearby that I couldn't believe anyone would try flying out of
there in the heavy fog that had settled into the valley. Three of the
choppers did it right and lifted straight up above the surrounding
hills and then headed toward Chicago. The one SRV was onboard took
off ascending as it went forward. It crashed into one of the hills
used in the winter as a ski run. Stupid mistake really. I didn't
hear anything that remotely sounded like a crash. I didn't learn
about the crash until the next morning. The following night, the show
moved on to St. Louis. I saw SRV many times throughout his career.
I'll never forget that his guitar tone was always the best of anyone
on any bill that I ever heard him play on. He walked the walk.

in Houston. That might have been a year or two before he died.. I
forgot..
It's kind of weird that I never saw him more than once being I live in
Houston. I missed all his small club shows when he was coming up.
He used to play Fitzgerald's all the time back when he was small time.
But.. I didn't know who he was, so never went to see him. :/
It wasn't until Texas Flood came out that I heard him. And after he
was big, I always seemed to miss all his shows.. Except for that
one at the dome.. And I missed the first part of that, because the
danged shuttle bus was late dragging us into the place.
I remember Pat Travers was also at that show. He played after SRV
on a different stage as I recall.
I spent the next frustrating week trying to wrap my head around his style.
photo of him hanging in my guitar room...
They were at various venues that were reachable with effort, but I let it go thinking, "I'll see him when he gets around to touring Oz" which of course didn't happen. Shit.
So nowadays, I never put off seeing who I want to see......
