It took me a few years to figure it out, but, I came to the
conclusion that I just never liked College Rock....  I had this
friend that used to ask me about bands, but he could never
understand my logic - I didn't either - however - when I started
researching, and found this, I realized I despised EVERY band on
the list...

I mean - I went to college - and graduated - but, I was listening
to Judas Priest and Van Halen in the 80's :)

For some reason - I used to confuse U2 and The Cult all the
time... To me, The Cult are Gods compared to U2....

That list makes little sense to me. Actually, I never heard the term
"college rock" until it got mentioned here. It seems like a pretty
flimsy excuse for a genre. I mean, how are, say, Devo and John Hyatt
anything alike?

I actually like lots of the bands on this list. Not that that I
necessarily have records by all of them, but I've heard enough that I
think I get their general gist.

I whittled it down to 50. You can tell from this that I'm not much into
metal:

Robyn Hitchcock
Pixies
The Psychedelic Furs
R.E.M.
The Replacements
The Smiths
XTC
The B-52's
Kate Bush
Peter Case
Alex Chilton
Elvis Costello
Marshall Crenshaw
Crowded House
The dB's
Devo
The Dukes of Stratosphear
The English Beat
Peter Gabriel
Joe Jackson
Midnight Oil
Bob Mould
Sinéad O'Connor
Michael Penn
The Pogues
Prefab Sprout
Public Image Ltd.
The Ramones
Jonathan Richman
The Smithereens
Squeeze
Talking Heads
They Might Be Giants
Throwing Muses
U2
Tom Waits
Was (Not Was)
World Party
'Til Tuesday
The Blue Nile
The Del Fuegos
Tim Finn
John Hiatt
Los Lobos
The Plimsouls
Prince
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Matthew Sweet
Tears for Fears

Other than a few (Tears for Fears, for example) that list is a pretty
good definition of what passed for "college rock" in those days. By
the way, that is not an obscure term, (what rock did you live under).
"The Chris" thinks "College Rock" had something to do with "going to
college". What an imbecile.
I guess alt-country or "insurgent country" (that's how we tell the
difference between Kenny Chesney & Billy Joe Shaver) is another
unknown genre for this board of geniuses?
