There was a thread on pinch harmonics on alt.guitar.bass that inspired
this question, but I thought it more rightly belonged here.
I do my best pinch harmonics without a pick. In quick succession:
Down-pick string with tip of index fingernail, quickly followed by a
choke & release with side of thumb (holding index finger & thumb
together as if holding an imaginary pick).

....that's what I do, but using/holding a pick.
Sometimes I end up bouncing the sting off a knuckle if delay a little, or pick really deep.
