Now is where I get confused again - my expectation is that in series
it should sound a little fatter/'bigger' but this is not the case. It
sounds noticeably fatter with both pickups on in parallel. Is this
due to the neck pickup bring RW/RP?

I go to my local electronics store and get mini-jacks, both male and female, I clip the lead wire from the new pickup I am installing and solder the male on, making sure the ground and live are correct then I clip the one that was in the guitar with about three to four inches of lead wire and solder the female jack, fold the excess lead wire with a nylon tie, clip off the excess, and reinstall the new pickup. ...
