I actually bought mine used on ebay, but from a local guy. I used
to have a J-Station, I liked that a lot, but it got fried. I know
a lot of people who had fried J-Stations...pretty common....but
they sounded good when working.

Yeah, the J-Station has a 5-pin DIN connector on the back that can be
used for either their proprietary footswitch OR a MIDI connection,
function depending on a switch setting back there. Problem was that if
you had the switch set wrong and plugged in a MIDI cable when the
switch was set for the footswitch, you fried the device. BAD BAD design
decision!

On mine, some of the pushbuttons are becoming flaky and don't always
respond. And the pots are getting scratchy. I've never been able to get
a clean sound I was very happy with, but some of the distorted settings
are very good. I can't help think that modeling technology has
improved, so I'm starting to look for a replacement.

It looks like on the Tonelab ST you can only scroll though the patches
up and down in order, right? You can't arbitrarily go to one? I see the
make a Tonelab SE that looks like it might be more usable to me,
although it's twice the price and twice the size. Anyway, they both
look interesting.

True, you can only scroll...and that is one of the drawbacks for most
people. For me it doesn't matter because I basically use four patches
period for live playing. You can jump by ten by holding a button and
pressing a footswitch. That works for me, because if I have seperate
settings for different guitars I can just use the four presets 10
above or below for each guitar (if that makes sense). I debated the
SE, but just wanted something small. The SE is even bigger than the
Line 6 short board which I was using...too big for what I need right
now. The ST makes up for it's shortcomings vs: the SE by hooking to
the computer via USB for recording direct...which I also use it for.
My PODxt will be on it's way out the door soon....served me well
though.
