Made from '62 to around '66. 10 watts out of 2 EL84's into a 12".
Retubed, replaced the 2x20uf filters on the 6CA4 rect and the 1k/1w
resis feeding the EL34's. Not much to look at but a real kewl amp to
jam on if you're looking for a bluesy sound at a low volume. And when
cranked it has a surprising amount of volume without massive
distortion.

Good timing on this post... I'm looking for a very low wattage amp for
recording and, as old GA-8's and the like aren't easy to find locally,
I thought I'd check out the new Vox ac4 series of switchable wattage
amps.http://www.voxamps.com/us/modernclassic/ac4tv/

I've played and heard some of the old Gibsons, like the GA-8; loved
the sound, but figured ultimately they were a one-trick-pony... good
slightly overdriven blues sound. OTOH, that's pretty much what I'm
looking for, so I guess it comes down more to what's available on the
market that doesn't cost a ton. Right now I use either my Boogie
Studio cal 22, and old beat to livin' shit Magnatone accordion amp
(real vibrato not working), or my POD. I'm just looking for something
I don't have to do much dicking with for recording. Plug it in, turn
up the volume, set the mic, and go. At about $150 - $200 the Vox
sounds like a bargain. Anybody here have any experience with this
amp???

Play nicely...

I have an Airline GA-8T clone in my shop too. This one with a 10"
spkr. And they modded the front end to use ECC83'S instead of the
much more expensive 6EU7. If you like the GA-8T sound you can
also look for its equivalent, the Epiphone EA-35T. Same circuit but
I've never seen one so I don't know what speaker they come with.

As far as the AC4 goes it might sound pretty good but it's got one
EL84. The GA 8T came in two versions both 10 watts. Pretty straigh
forward amp circuit, no frills and all P2P wired with a liberal use of
Sprague orange drops and a couple black beauties .022uf caps.- Hide quoted text -

Yea... the AC4 might be just a weaker cousin to the Boogie. I think
I'll stop by after the holiday and check one out just for kicks.
thanks.
