How to make side dots?

Not a guitar question, but I reckon the answer would be similar if it
were...

I have a ukulele that has no side position markers. I've had bits of
tape stuck there for the past several months, but I'd like to install
some permanent ones. I'm thinking I could drill a shallow hole in the
edge of the fingerboard and fill it with white paint (or some resin-
like material?) or a chip of white plastic or actual guitar inlay
material.

What do you think? Am I on the right track? Any advice?
