Obama's speech was disappointing in terms of hard, LBJ-style
arm twisting.

His speech was disappointing in many ways, lots of half-truths
and fuzzy fiscal dancing, and no mention whatsoever of badly
needed tort reform.

I agree something should be done, but a health bill with no
tort reform in it, is like putting a band aid on a severed
artery.

He most certainly did talk about tort reform.

I read the text of the speech, and didnt see a single mention
specifically of tort reform.

I did see this, but i find it a somewhat limp-wristed and vague
reference to tort reform: "Finally, many in this chamber ?V
particularly on the Republican side of the aisle ?V have long
insisted that reforming our medical malpractice laws can help
bring down the cost of health care. I don't believe malpractice
reform is a silver bullet, but I have talked to enough doctors to
know that defensive medicine may be contributing to unnecessary
costs. So I am proposing that we move forward on a range of ideas
about how to put patient safety first and let doctors focus on
practicing medicine."

"move forward".. lol. yeah sure. but, i guess i stand corrected,
there was a SORT Of mention of it. I disagree with his stance on
it totally, but, OK.

More pointedly, I saw this, which is a joke, and patented political
hypocritical finger pointing and blame denial, which is what I
despise about all politicans:

"Part of the reason I faced a trillion dollar deficit when I
walked in the door of the White House is because too many
initiatives over the last decade were not paid for ?V from the
Iraq War to tax breaks for the wealthy"

and of course theres no military forces in Afghanistan under his
direction right now, no, nothing like that. He's not exactly
calling them home, is he. But I'm sure we arent spending a dime in
Afghanistan. Its ALL George Bushs fault, isnt it.

Its paragraphs like that, that make me cast doubt upon his
sincerity and the entire plan.

oh and one other thing, i might be wrong, but from everything I've
been able to gather from listening and reading, without actually
reading HealthBill HR3200, there is no provision for ANY tort
reform at all. This seems to be partly because this is a mostly
Dem-sponsored bill, and Dems are loathe to approach tort reform...
notice even Obama says his "Republican friends" brought it up to him

for that, i offer that his response to tort reform is weak. He's
not even admitting that the new bill HR3200 has no tort reform in
it... its just lip service. More smoke and mirrors for the public.

I admit, I have not read HR3200, if there IS specific measures for
tort reform in that bill, then I'm wrong, and I admit it.

We will have to wait for final passage before you can be declared
officially wrong. I'm willing to wait!

As far as I'm concerned, he indicated in his speech that he would be
willing to sign a final bill that included tort reform as a
component.

uh, I sure as hell didnt hear that in his speech. I heard a lot of
fuzzy math and finger pointing and blame denial. As an idealist, I
have admiration for him, he's a great humanitarian. But like Carter,
humanitarians sometimes make lousy presidents because they cant push
their idology thru in a practical way.

You better not hold your breath for any REAL tort reform, especially
from the dumbocrats. Obama knows it too. There aint gonna be any, not
in HR3200 or the next one, unless some kinda bipartisan miracle
occurs... and as long as Reid and Pelosi are breathing, theres not
gonna be any bipartisan-ship either.

thats another thing that kills me... Obama can go on and on about
reaching across the aisles and all this shit, and who is directly
behind him? The two most hateful, bigotted and partisan pieces of
shit in Washington today, as his bulldogs. Fired Pelosi and Reid and
maybe I'll believe some of that rhetoric.

HR3200 is essentially off the table.
Most likely to pass is the bill coming out of the Senate Finance
Committee (Max Baucus & Co.). I'm not sure what's in it because the
language hasn't been finalized, but I don't expect it to be much like
the House bill at all.
