Depends on the amp - in general, I start with everything but the master volume at midpoint, then twiddle from there until I get what I want.

But with my XV112 what works best is to turn everything to zero, set the pre-gain and master to get the volume level and grind I want, and then turn the tones up a little at a time until I get what I want.

....but the best way to learn is to just plain tweek around with your own amp. There's no one way.
