No, they haven't. It goes in cycles - just post about the on-topic
things you're interested in, and wait. It will come around, it always
does. In the meantime, my advise is to just liberally use a
combination of your killfile and ignoring the junk, and don't let it
get to you.

Ah, an optimist I see! Well, let's hope that n.g. behavior operates like the stock market, or better yet, the sunspot cycles which operate in 11 year periods. :-)

Not to shake your optimism, nor to exaggerate my pessimism (i'm actually not that bad) but let's take a look at some sample stats: alt.politics.usa, in which name-calling and trolling is the norm, has 51405 current posts. Alt.guitar.amplifiers has 31. An old favorite, alt.guitar.effects has 344. Alt.guitar.amps fares better at 13140, but almost all of them are OT. Will these rebound in some future upcycle? Only time will tell.

I'm not picking on you, Carl, but I'm gonna have another general rant and conveniently tack it onto your post.

There are plenty of on-topic threads in alt.guitar. Some of the people who moan about the death of the group just choose to not participate in any of them. For people new to the group, the threads may be obfuscated by the surprisingly large amount of crap (I don't see most of it usually). For regulars with a killfile and a spot of housekeeping, there's usually just the good stuff.

You may recall a "Correct fingering for soloing" thread a couple of weeks ago. A few people replied with suggestions and I posted some basic scales and stuff, yet one of the doomsayers cited that thread as an example of what the group has degenerated into. If "how to play the guitar" is considered to be noise on a guitar newsgroup, then I'm not sure what the group is for.

As it turned out, the OP wasn't a beginner at all. He'd been a gigging guitarist who'd spent 40 years honing his bad habits to such a fine art that he's finding it difficult to do what most of us find natural and obvious. If I could find the group charter, I'm sure it would say that the group welcomes such posts with open arms.

Does anyone know if a charter exists, just out of interest?

While that would seem to be a good document to have I rather doubt one exists. alt domain has never been moderated and such a document would only fly in the face of unreason.
