I think geographic poximity to a team is about *the* lamest rationale

Geographic proximity has it's benefits - being able to attend games
rather than just watch them, being able to meet the players, etc.
Your wife once lived in the state- and she's
a fan? You are married to someone who once lived in the state...and
you're a fan of the state university's football team? SO many humans are

humans evolve...and that requires geological measures of time... M
Well, since you brought up human evolution - look at it this way:
sports are basically just a modern substitute for tribal warfare. They
allow us to vent our primal agression and lust for conquest in a
harmless way. It's tribe vs. tribe, us vs. them. In this light, why
*NOT* root for your home team? Unless you can provide DNA evidence
that you've evolved beyond the rest of us, you're fooling youself.
Also, the "fan by marriage" remark was partially a joke, but there
*IS* some truth to it. I never watched college games until I met Judy.
She got me to watch PSU. But I continue to follow them because of
Paterno. Sure, I joke about his advanced age, but I have enormous
respect for his coaching skills, and (as you said) his integrity.
