OK, I've hesitated to post this...just in case. But apparently I've
fixed my computer problem (intermittent internet connection).
Got a cheap network card from Radio Crap. Installed it, and I've
been using it constantly since 3 pm.
NO INTERNET GLITCHES!
I also found yet another spy program (Media Motor) on my computer
which McAfee, AdAware, and SpybotS&D missed entirely. I had
downloaded several other spyware programs and a program called
XoftSpy caught it. It wouldn't remove it however and so I dug around
on the web (once a decent connection was restored) and found
instructions for manual removal. I had to search for about 30
registry keys in addition to deleting a couple of files.
Anyway all spyware-detection programs are now coming up clean, my
system is faster than it's been for a long time, and both Firefox
and IE are working correctly and quickly with none of the interrupts
whatsoever that I was experiencing before.
Turns out also that there wasn't a separate network card on my PC. I
hadn't opened up the box in years so I had forgotten -- it's
integrated on the motherboard. But it was still easy to pop the new
one in, install the driver, and turn the other one off.
I'm in business! Thanks to all who helped!
Just for the sake of those still dealing with the "Internet Nasties",
I've come across a couple of free tools on the web that I'm really
liking a lot. Most can be picked up on download.com just by searching
for them..
malwarebytes- a great little malware search and destroy tool that
will also hunt down and wipe out browser hijackers.
Yeah, a few other folks recommended that one at some point along the
line. Fixed my issues before I got a chance to download it though.
Advanced System Care- a cool little "all-in-one" that finds and fixes
spyware, registry and malware issues. It can be bundled with "Smart
Defrag" which kicks the *** of Windows built in defragger.
At one point I had a couple of those all-in-one jobs on my system, one
from Symantec and another from, hmmm, I forget. Seemed that in the end
they had their own issues.
I've got Diskkeeper to defrag (the real one with boot-time defragging)
so I don't use the windows one.
Spyware Terminator- Like the name says.
I would like to second having a Knoppix or other Linux distro live CD
for troubleshooting. It will even let you browse your Windows files
and recover them if you have a corrupted OS or boot sector. Kind of
handy to have if you have to do a complete "mind wipe" of your system
to kill a particularly nasty bug.
Best wishes...
Steve (geek)
Thanks!
