OK, I've hesitated to post this...just in case. But apparently I've
fixed my computer problem (intermittent internet connection).

Got a cheap network card from Radio Crap. Installed it, and I've
been using it constantly since 3 pm.

NO INTERNET GLITCHES!

I also found yet another spy program (Media Motor) on my computer
which McAfee, AdAware, and SpybotS&D missed entirely. I had
downloaded several other spyware programs and a program called
XoftSpy caught it. It wouldn't remove it however and so I dug around
on the web (once a decent connection was restored) and found
instructions for manual removal. I had to search for about 30
registry keys in addition to deleting a couple of files.

Anyway all spyware-detection programs are now coming up clean, my
system is faster than it's been for a long time, and both Firefox
and IE are working correctly and quickly with none of the interrupts
whatsoever that I was experiencing before.

Turns out also that there wasn't a separate network card on my PC. I
hadn't opened up the box in years so I had forgotten -- it's
integrated on the motherboard. But it was still easy to pop the new
one in, install the driver, and turn the other one off.

I'm in business! Thanks to all who helped!

It must feel good after all that...you didn't give up...and you kicked
it's ass.

It does feel good.
The excursion into virus/spyware land turned out not to be pertinent to
the main point - getting a reliable internet connection once more - but
I sure as hell learned a whole lot about the subject and I've now got a
certifiably clean machine.

A+ :-) M
