Run a full scan...

All files.

Full scan was run this morning (it happens automatically every
Friday).

If the scan doesn't find anything it's probably hardware.

Nothing found other than something called CoolWebSearch (which
shows up every time I run a scan and which McAfee can't
disable).

well...

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CoolWebSearch>

that's something that rates it's own Wikipedia page, for a
reason...

If you get a new machine with enough power don't be afraid
of Vista. Once you turn off the nanny stuff it's not that bad.
It runs like shit on obsolete hardware, though.

I run Vista Ultimate in a VMware virtual machine so I can still
use some software I bought ages ago. It hasn't given me any
problems and I only give it 2GB RAM. It even runs an old Win 98
Blackjack trainer that I had on a 3 1/2 disc, once I got it off
the disc
and onto the system. First time I launched it, Vista asked if I
*really* wanted it to launch the incredibly out of date program
and when I confirmed, it configured some sort of little
compatibility window and launched it without problems. It
launches in it's own little world now when I click the icon.

Pretty cool.

Windows 98 in a window of it's own under Vista which is in
*it's* own window under VMware which runs nicely on lots
of things.

OK, thanks for the info. I've been reluctant to go the Vista
route because of *so many* complaints about issues.

If I decide to upgrade OS, there's no reason to hang onto this
computer any longer. So the likely pathway is a new system.
However, I need to hold off a decision until at least the end of
next week, at which point I should know whether our little
15-person startup gets bought by a big fish or goes belly up.
If the latter, I have to watch my expenditures and I may try
just a new network card in the hope that it cures the problem.

Network card - $10.00 used, but read that Wikipedia...

OK, probably worth a try. I'll need to go to my other system to
read the wiki article...will do...thanks!

OK, it looks like CoolWebSearch isn't as benign as I thought it
was, but it doesn't look like it's responsible for this particular
problem.

FWIW I run AdAware regularly and it doesn't seem to remove
CoolWebSearch either.

I'd get rid of that by whatever means necessary before wasting
any more time on other things. Then roll the service pack.

You might be SOL if you can't get rid of it...

If *it's* using your network resources at an elevated priority
it could cause your symptoms...

Not that I dispute what you're saying, however...
That CoolWebSearch has been showing up for *months* on AV scans. I
didn't do anything about it because I thought it was benign. But the
point is, if that were responsible for my current issues, wouldn't
those issues have shown up months ago as well?

Getting to be too many circles in this thread, but as I mentioned
in the response I just sent before this, the paylaod can be anything.

Anything.

From swap your screen saver and redirect your browsers to prono sites
to upload your hard drive contents in bursts to West Bulgaria or a
nice condo in East Beijing.

Sleep and wake on demand is basic equipment in the Zombie Army.

There was some sort of net.Zombie call-to-arms in the not too far
past.

Your'a probably heard the call and awakened.

Gotcha.
Shit.
