it will completely reset your TCP/IP stack. Win2k isn't a
problem, its still a good OS and more than capable. Hell, I can
web browse on an 8-bit Atari.
For a good AV that will run under 2k try Avast. For Anti spyware
try SpybotSD. Both free and top notch.

OK, I tried downloading and installing WinSockFix. No luck.
Well that pretty much rules out TCP/IP. On to the LAN/WAN. Are you
running a modem/router or just a modem? Is the modem in bridge mode
or NAT mode?

Mark, it's a fiber-optic system (Verizon FIOS).
The "modem" isn't really a modem in a conventional sense since the
info is already coming over the optic in digital form.
The cable from the outside is connected to a router with four
outputs, and I have two network cables running from that to the two
computers. At the moment I'm posting from my recording computer,
which I usually don't have connected to the net, and it's working
(tho I have to use Google Groups since I don't have a newsreader on
this machine).
I just tried once more connecting from the other computer and still
no luck.

*Occasionally* I can get things going for a little while on the other
computer by flushing the DNS cache and rebooting.
I'd prefer not to use this one for internet since it has no AV &
firewall.

Is the router running NAT? I'd assume it is. If one machine connects
ok and the other doesn't I'd be more likely to think its a Windows
problem.

Not sure. I have no idea what it's running or how to find out.
I have however flipped cables around and it seems not to make a
difference.

Right now I've been posting on the computer with the problem for about 2
hours without a problem. However I haven't run any other internet
applications. I may open one up just to see what happens.

Software firewalls are a PITA. I get so many machines with problems
because their firewall has locked out important services. That would
be the first place I'd look.

There's one other piece of info that may be pertinent (at least there's
a slight chance).

Several weeks ago I inadvertently changed the date on the computer a few
months ahead. What happened was that I opened the computer calendar to
see about a certain date next month and clicked OK rather than cancel,
so for a few hours it was set ahead.

During this period, McAfee downloaded a new update. What I'm wondering
is if it's possible that it got tagged with the new date when it was
downloaded, and therefore McAfee thinks it doesn't need to download
additional updates until that date is passed? If so, is there anything
I can do about it?
